Leather Saddlebags From Rusty Knuckles For Harley Dyna's and Softails, Built For All Of The Lane Splitters

Rusty Knuckles custom leather saddle bags with acid etched and hand stitched Harley Davidson emblems

Creating a set of saddle bags from raw materials and building to fit a bike can be quite the challenge. For a good while now, ideas have been inked on a well thumbed page in the sketchbook as a project to get done. Luckily for us, the years of hard work and showcasing our capabilities allow for customers to spring up that want unique custom items.

One such customer out of Pennsylvania just so happened to want a set of narrow saddle bags that would fit their softail and to be in a deep cherry color to match their bike. I presented my sketches to them for a style of bag and we hatched a plan.

These bolt on saddle bags can easily be built to fit onto any bike, its just a matter of what mounting bracket that is intended to be used. We asked the customer to pick up a set of their choosing and would attach the support slot for the bracket accordingly. They chose to pick up these Saddlemen Brackets from J&P Cycle and shipped them over.

Being the fact that we also wanted a deep color to the bags with a unique look, we picked up some extra heavyweight ox blood leather in 10 oz. Then to achieve the color choice, opted to dye it some more after a light top scuffing and air brush the edges with a black fade. Another aspect that was key was a very tight fit and profile so match the bike. Nothing too bulky for hauling groceries, but a solid set of bags that could pack your leathers, some tools, oil and any other quick essentials you might need for the road.

Needless to say we are quite proud of these bags and working to produce a line of them now starting in deep black and full custom color options. We have one more round of prototypes to produce to work out any more bugs with brackets and hardware and will then be offering them as a new product in our online stores. Lots of options to also work in such as quick release mounting bolts and a locking option.

Making A Custom Chopper Seat

Custom chopper seat for Pale Horse Kustoms, by Rusty Knuckles Leather

Making a custom seat is something that our small shop has grown to appreciate and enjoy. Much of our leather work focuses around music gear, but motorcycles have always been a true passion. Over the last year, more and more seat projects started to come through the door and we are now offering more expansive of an approach to handle custom needs. Our custom work focuses more on an illustrative style rather than a stylistic upholstery approach.

Rick Barton of Continental Is Currently Recording At Muscle Shoals

Rick posing with guitarist Kelvin Lee Holly
"Muscle Shoals AL - Rick Barton is having the time of his life while working at the same time. When asked his about experience this far recording at Portside Sound Studio, Barton said, "There are many many spine tingling moments on this record."

Portside Sound Studio is the same studio as the second incarnation of Muscle Shoals sound studio, which operated from 1978-1990 and was featured in the outstanding documentary about the legendary Alabama music scene.

Barton met producer Kimi Samson while touring with Continental last Summer and was invited to record at the room by Samson. Daniel Murner is engineering the sessions.

One of the many perks of the studio for Barton has been being able to work with several local musicians including guitarist Kelvin Lee Holly (Little Richard, Gregg Allman, The Amazing Rhythm Aces).

Barton, who is under contract with Rusty Knuckles Music, has relished in the moment. "It has been fucking mind blowing," said the original Dropkick Murphy's guitarist."

Curio Set To Launch Brand New Album On April 14th

Curio Set To Launch Brand New Album On April 14th

Pre-order the brand new album from Curio

Curio's tales have been described as 'Midwest murder ballads' that depict the timeless narrative of wrong-doing and temptation. Chicago has historically been home to some of the most notorious cheats as well as tough-as-nails workin' folk and Curio walks the line between the rogue waltz of Prohibition-era bootleggers and the brute tenacity of the old Union Stock Yards butchers. Like their name implies, Curio is a collection of oddities whose sound has been weathered over the years.

1. Original Sin
2. Tall Tales
3. Ditch Diggin' Blues
4. Raise Some Hell
5. Bad Men & Bad Luck
6. Junkyard Crown
7. Born To Lose
8. Somethin' In The Barn
9. Nothin' But A Ruse

The Gold Web Enlivens Chicago Glam Rock

The Gold Web is Brian Selke, aka Dr. Weed, from left; Max Perenchio, aka Silver Wizard; Rich Lombardo, aka Goldilox; and Jake Serek, aka St. Snake. (Courtesy of The Gold Web)

Art is more important than ever for Chicago musicians.

Just ask Max Perenchio of The Gold Web. The glam rock project may seem like a cultural throwback in a city filled with generic garage rock bands, but Perenchio said the group has greater cultural, social and political goals than its appearance might suggest.

The transition from traditional rock band to glam rock was a quick one for the group. After touring with classic glam rock band Kiss in a different band, Perenchio began incorporating costumes and other extravagant looks into his aesthetic, adopting a character (Silver Wizard) in the process. Other members of The Gold Web followed suit.

"It turned the whole band experience into a ritual where every single show, you're putting on 9-inch platforms and wigs and makeup," he said. "There's something about this energy where you can kind of be whoever you want to be, even if it's just for one night."

Haunting Driftwood Sculptures By Japanese Artist Nagato Iwasaki

Nagato Iwasaki is one of those artists you don’t know much about. But his art talks for itself.

The Japan-based artist creates incredible driftwood sculptures. Each of his human-shaped figures can both mesmerize and scare you. The artist manages to create an uneasy feeling using nothing but wood and you can be sure, that if you’d stumble upon one of these sculptures at night, you’d go sleepless for days.

The Forgotten New Yorker who Changed the ‘80s Music Scene

Ruth Polsky at Danceteria

When the members of New Order arrived in New York for their first North American gigs in 1980, they were greeted by a booking agent, a drug supplier, a tour guide and their own personal chef — all of whom were the same woman.

The Brits were just one of dozens of new wave and post-punk acts imported across the Atlantic by New Yorker Ruth Polsky. During her tenure as a talent booker at seminal Manhattan nightclubs Hurrah on West 62nd Street (1979 to 1982) and Danceteria on West 21st Street (1982 to 1986), she was the first to take chances on then-unknown bands such as Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Smiths, the Psychedelic Furs and many more. With disco and rock still dominant in the charts, Polsky had a rare ear for fresh sounds, and took chances in bringing them to the United States before most other club bookers would dare.

A Company Will Press Your Ashes into a Working Vinyl Album

When the final track of your life finishes playing, how would you like to be remembered? Do you want to be buried and forgotten like a bad solo album? Or would you like to be encased for posterity like a big platinum record? Or maybe you hope to continue being heard, like a legendary musician that lives on forever. Well, if you hope to have your song play long after you’ve left the recording studio of life, there’s a way for that to happen–literally–by having your ashes pressed into a vinyl record.

Never too Young to Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Third Grade Punk of "Old Skull"

There’s been much ado—countless articles, TV appearances galore,  a whole movie even—about pre-teen rockers Unlocking the Truth. Which is fine and all, but what if I told you there was another band, decades before, that were even younger, sold more records, toured extensively, and rode a wave of minor rock fame all the way to high school?

It’s true. And if Unlocking the Truth knew what happened to ‘em after the band broke up—a saga much grimmer than your average episode of VH1’s Behind the Music—they’d find new hobbies. Old Skull formed in Madison, Wisconsin when a couple of punk rock dads—Vern Toulon (Missing Foundation) and Robin Davies (Tar Babies)—decided to recruit their sons into the lucrative world of indie-rock. Toulon’s kids JP and Jamie handled guitar/vocals and keyboards respectively, and Davies’ stepson JP pounded the skins. They “wrote” songs about hot dogs and AIDS (most people assume Toulon senior composed the music, but the truth is lost in the mists of time) and bashed ‘em out with impressive energy, if not finesse. Which was fine, I mean, it was hardcore punk made by kids who were in the third-grade.

Curio's Latest Album, "Tall Tales!"

Rusty Knuckles presents Curio's, latest album, 'Tall Tales.'

'Tall Tales' is a collection of down and dirty, Chicago bastard blues tunes, about bad men & bad luck, inspired by the rags to rags struggles of dreamers and schemers.

It's a record written by outcasts and outsiders, for outcasts and outsiders. Album artwork by Curio bassist, Donovan Foote.

The World’s First “Acoustically Perfect” Concert Hall Opens in Germany

The newly opened Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, Germany is a visually stunning structure from a design perspective, with its gorgeous wave-shaped facade, curved elevators, and its seemingly endless stairs. However, the focal point of the $843 million building is its one of a kind central auditorium designed specifically for a balanced sound throughout the concert hall.

As reported by Wired, Swiss architectural firm Herzog and De Meuron worked alongside One to One studio to painstakingly build the coral reef-like structure from 10,000 unique acoustic panels lining the ceiling, walls, and balustrades.

Tattooed Babies And Tortured Teens: ‘The Kid’ Turns Youthful Angst Into Art

How to escape the chains that bind us from birth – that’s one of the questions The Kid is trying to answer. At 25, the contemporary artist’s young age has no bearing on his work, except for the fact that his pieces address the social determinism that weighs upon the younger generation these days.

The Kid in front of his painting I go alone, oil on canvas, 2016. (Source: The Kid/Facebook)
A self-taught artist, he is still using the same media (charcoal and ink pens) he started out with in the first pieces he exhibited. But he also excels at oil painting and silicone sculpture, as we can see in Too Young To Die? and As A Flower Chooses Its Color (be warned, this one might be hard to look at).
Today in Paris and Amsterdam, where he’s preparing his next exhibit, The Kid took some time between catching trains and painting to answer a few questions.

Vinyl Sales Aren't Dead: The 'New' Billion Dollar Music Business

Photographer: Noriko Hayashi/Bloomberg
Vinyl records are projected to sell 40 million units in 2017. This will bring the past seven years’ collective sales to the $1 billion benchmark for the first time this millennium. This impressive milestone has been untouched since the peak of the industry in the 1980s. While explosive by today’s standards, according to Deloitte, in its heyday (‘81), total vinyl album sales topped $1 billion in just that year alone.

The record industry’s hunters and gatherers have been busy collecting. According to Deloitte, new vinyl records and revenue will enjoy a seventh consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2017. But the slice of the pie is still a very small one - with broader music industry revenues projected to be approximately $15 billion this year, vinyl will account for only 6%.

I spoke with Toddrick Spalding, the Director of Music at the trailer production agency Mob Scene – a music expert by trade, and avid record collector in Los Angeles. At 37 years old, Spalding listens to vinyl daily. His “modest” collection is a very highly-curated mix of 2,000 albums, both old and new. Other collectors have over 10,000 albums, completing discographies and aggregating every album from a specific record label, so he feels his is relatively small. Anytime he travels somewhere new, Spalding takes a dedicated day to find the record store and add to his collection.

In Just 7 Years, Vinyl Records Have Gone from ‘Fad’ to ‘Billion Dollar Industry’

That’s right: vinyl records are about to become a billion dollar industry.  That’s the latest prediction from Deloitte, who exclusively shared their data with Digital Music News.

Looks like those beard-growing, wine-sipping hipsters were on to something.  That is, a billion dollars worth of something.   According to a game-smashing prediction released this morning, sales of vinyl records are set to become a billion dollar industry.  That is, in 2017 after just seven years.
Specifically, sales of records themselves will reach the $800-900 million-mark, with turntables and other accessories likely throwing things into 9-figures.

After that, who knows how big this can go.  The prediction was outlined in Deloitte’s just-issued ‘TMT Predictions’ report.  “Music industry vinyl is expected to continue its remarkable resurgence, approaching US $1 billion globally in revenues for the first time this millennium,” the report declares.

“New vinyl revenues and units are likely to enjoy a seventh consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2017.”

Actually, music industry groups like the IFPI have been counting ten straight years of growth.  But hey, let’s not squabble: this is a growth spurt that keeps going, and bringing new users into the mix.

And reshaping an entire music industry in the process.
